Pre Wedding Photography - Burrator with Adam and Bethany

Sunset Alert..... yep, we've only gone and got another one in this shoot!

I realise I've already posted the wedding, but the pre wedding shoot had slipped through the next and this was such a relaxed session to shoot that I couldn't resit in sharing it.

We had a great walk at the eastern end of Burrator reservoir as that always gives a lot of options in very close proximity to each other. When we were finished there, it looked like the sky might be playing ball, so I suggested popping up the hill to the Princetown road to see if we could get a bit of a sunset. Fortunately, we got there in time for the last few minutes and could grab some photos before the sun was gone.

Fun was the name of the game at Casey and Peter's wedding. The weather, the car, the church, the venue, the food, the party, everything was just great, and I had a blast capturing the moments for them.

Now, for those who have followed me for a while will know that I'm a sucker for a sunset, and we were treated to some amazing colours at the end of the day, enabling us to capture some lovely photos of the bride and groom.

Pre Wedding Photography - Danni and Rob - Ivybridge Woods

Sometimes you meet a couple, and just know that they are right for one another. That's Danni and Rob 100%.

It was fascinating speaking to them both and getting to know them, the way that their characters are the complete opposites of what you would expect them to be on first meeting.

It's also a great complement, and a real privilege, when asked by another photographer (Rob) to take responsibility for shooting their big day.

This pre wedding shoot was in Ivybridge woods and I had no clue this was even a location. I'm certainly going to be going back, it was beautiful, and the perfect look for Rob and Danni.

Bigbury Pre Wedding Photography Shoot - Amy and Rob

Oh yes, this was a good one! a fantastic evening, warm enough to not need wrapping up, clear skies, sunset and dancing on the beach..... winner!!

I had so much fun photographing Amy and Rob over at Bigbury, we nearly had the beach to ourselves which makes my life so much easier and also, for any couple, it can help with feeling that everyone is watching.

It's not an uncommon thing, I find with most couples, on the pre-wedding shoot they are self conscious, probably due to being photographed professionally in public isn't an every day occurrence. It's totally different on a wedding day, as everyone is expecting them to be with a photographer, getting awesome shots.

The Cow Shed in Freathy Wedding - Gemma and Ben

Now, if this isn't a little darling of a secret venue, I don't know what is. I hadn't heard of the Cow Shed before Gemma contacted me about shooting their wedding there. After a little bit of searching, I was excited, and with good reason, it was great!

This was a full family wedding, complete with their dog, and oh, so much fun to photograph.

Everyone was so relaxed, the weather was simply stunning, and we even managed to get up to Rame, which is always going to be a winner as far as I'm concerned.

Pre-wedding Photography with Sarah and Kevin - Burrator

We had a lovely walk around Burrator and discovered this natural arch in the trees, so obviously, it had to be used for some lovely photos.

As many of you know, I really enjoy working with strobes and 'created' light, but when we can use natural light with lovely surroundings, it makes life so easy.

Calstock Wedding - Katie and Paul

Colour, energy, laughs and love. That's a pretty good mix for a wedding and Katie and Paul, plus family and friends had them in spades.

This was the first time for me photographing at this location, and it was absolutely lovely. The Calstock Arts centre had a really unique feel and amazing view over the river, making it exceptional for a wedding ceremony. Then, after that we were down the hill to the local social club for an amazing evening.

So many characters, at this wedding, not least our amazingly funny groom, had me laughing and smiling all throughout the day.

Emma and Joe's Wedding - Horn of Plenty

The Horn of Plenty https://www.thehornofplenty.co.uk/ has to be one of my favourite locations to photograph, not only is the house stunning, but the grounds are wonderful and diverse, without the need to travel a long distance. On a wedding day, that really counts for a lot.

It was wonderful to be there when the bluebells were out, there is such a small window to photography them, so i was really happy that it all came together.

Emma and Joe were so much fun, as were their guests, making my day simply fantastic.

China Fleet Club Wedding - Lisa and Rob

Weddings at, or around Christmas are always special, not least if the weather stays dry to let us outside for a bit.

Lisa and Rob's was certainly no exception and China Fleet didn't disappoint. We weren't able to get out onto the course in a buggy as we would do at other times of the year, but that didn't stop Lisa and Rob getting some lovely moments, including a bit of sunset action.

I loved their cake, a mix of traditional, combined with many tiers of cupcakes.

Cornwall Wedding Photography - Bethany and Adam

This wedding was a total pleasure to photograph. I've known Adam and Bethany for quite a while so it was a real honour when they asked if I would be their photographer.

They had the preparations in Saltash, before heading to St Erney church and then the reception was in the hall at the Maker with Rame Community Hall. We also took the opportunity to pop up to Rame for some lovely views and then hit the beach in the evening (whilst trying to keep Adam from taking a dip, as he's renowned for going swimming in all temperatures).

To top off the evening, there was a Ceilidh and as ever, this was a huge success with pretty much everyone getting up on the dance floor.

It goes without saying, that was a blast, lots of variety, locations and laughs had by all.

Devon Wedding Photography - Tiverton - Danni and Rob

When you photograph so many great weddings it's sometimes hard to find something new to say. Working with Rob and Danni, it's not difficult at all. They define what being in love is all about, they break some stereotypes and really know how to have a ball.

It's so much fun photographing in different locations and Middle Coombe Farm is one place that has so much going for it. The wooded area is simply stunning and such a wonderful place for everyone to just get away from things for a bit.

So much effort was put in by them to create everything just right, with the stunning cake being made by Danni. I didn't even mention that everyone was camping on site so this wasn't just a one day thing, this was a weekend of fun for those closest to Danni and Rob.

Anyway, most people will have stopped reading by now so I will let you enjoy the photos. Huge thanks to Danni and Rob for having me as part of your special day and making me feel a part of the family.

Kitley House Wedding - Amy and Rob - Mark Smith Photography

Stunning, elegant and so much fun. I had a wonderful time with Amy and Rob at Kitley House Hotel, they were just so relaxed, totally in love and we even managed to have the ceremony outside by the water. AMAZING!

I truly love my job, it's not just about being in beautiful locations and taking photos, it's about the love that I get to see, the personalities that come out, the connection and shire joy of a wedding day. On many occasions I also have to hold in some pretty big laughs as to be honest, the quality of speeches is going up and up so I'm very entertained whilst working.

Horn of Plenty Wedding - Sarah and Kevin

Sarah and Kevin's wedding was simply beautiful, and I'm not sure if it was that Kevin is a fellow petrol head and had hired an Aston Martin for the weekend, or if it was something else, but I had a blast.

What's not to like? A fantastic couple, totally in love, a stunning location, weather that played ball and gave us a lovely sunset and even some sparklers to end the day off.

Dartmoor Zoo Wedding - Louise and Ben - Plymouth Wedding Photography

I know that I've said it before, but I love, love, love it when a wedding is a little different from the norm. Don't get me wrong, all weddings are amazing and unique, just some are a little more unique and Louise and Ben's is one of those.

Having the reception at Dartmoor Zoo was such a lot of fun for everyone involved, sure, if we had a little more time to maximise the venue I wouldn't have complained, but we were still able to capture some unique photos, especially with getting to feed the deer, how many people can claim that on their wedding day?

Becki and Mark's Wedding @ Strawberry Fields

Young, in love and beautiful, that's a pretty good combo for a wedding photographer to work with and it's exactly what Becki and Mark are. There's always a little bit extra pressure when photographing other photographers, and Mark and his brother (best man) used to be just that so it was all to play for.

Joking aside, it was just a wonderful day, fulled of joy, happiness, a few tears and a lot of partying.

I must have been doing something right this year as again the weather was on our side which was great with the classic car Becki and Mark had for the day. A really classy occasion from start to finish and I can truly say I was glad to have been a part, even if ever so small, of it.

I hope you all enjoy the photos and I would again like to offer my congratulations to the happy couple.

Sarah and Matthew's Wedding - St Mellion International Resort and Golf Club

Let me start by saying that there is nothing quite as romantic as a military wedding. I'm not sure what it is, it could be all of those great films of my youth or that we are in a sea port, but whatever it is, they are always great and a little bit special.

Sarah and Matt couldn't have been more fun to work with. Right from our first meeting to their pre-wedding shoot and the wedding day they were just lovely to be around and made me so welcome. Friends and family we no exception to this and as the photos show, everyone had an amazing time.

St Mellion never fails to deliver either, as well as being so well set up for getting beautiful photographs (it's a golf course after all), the staff are also fantastic and very helpful in all things so as ever, my thanks goes out to them as well.

It's time for me to stop writing and let the photographs tell the story.

Abi and Matt's Wedding - Hope Baptist Church then Elfordleigh

Oh what a beautiful day, I don't think that anyone could have asked for more really. Abi and Matt are a fantastic young couple, totally in love and all set for their big day.

The day started at Abi's parents for bridal prep photos, then a quick run down to the church to meet the boys for a few of them, then back up the hill to the girls to capture Dad's first look and some photos in the garden. Fortunately their home and the church are only 2 minutes apart.

After the wonderful ceremony at Hope Baptist Church, it was off to Elfordleigh Golf Club and Hotel to make the most of the stunning weather and great location. As well as the normal shots, we were able to get some gorgeous smoke photos in as well which really add a different dimension to things.

Now, let's talk about speeches, they were all great, but the best man was on fire, and his well crafted stories had everyone in stitches, even if the groom did get a little burned by what was said. That only left one thing..... PARTY. Entertainment was provided by The Sound, who were a classy outfit and had the whole room rocking all night to their fantastic playing and singing. Abi, an accomplished singer in her own right, also got up to entertain her guests which was great to see.

For their exit, it through an arch of sparklers, not something I had ever done before, but certainly a lovely way to end a great day of many happy memories and beautiful photos.

Abi and Matt - Plymouth Engagement Shoot - Bigbury

Got to love a beach pre-wedding shoot, especially one with a lovely young couple like Abi and Matt and some stunning weather!

Yes, happy photographer alert, there was a stunning sunset which we managed to incorporate into the shoot, to be honest, things don't get much better.

As you can see, we had a great time, and even Matt enjoyed himself which is perfect as he will admit to not loving his photo being taken.

Roll on August for their big day, I can't wait!!

Moorland Garden Hotel Wedding - Jessica and Scott - Plymouth Wedding Photography

What an amazing wedding, I had so much fun being a part of Jessica and Scott's big day, what a fantastic couple.

I don't think it's a secret that Scott wasn't really looking forward to being photographed, however, he was game for a laugh and it paid off as we were able to capture some beautiful memories from the day.

Plymouth Wedding Photograph - Katie and Steve's Blessing

Katie and Steve were married a few months earlier in Birmingham and then had a blessing in Plymouth to be able to celebrate with even more people (anything for a party!).

Wet is an understatement for the day they chose, I don't recall a worse day all year so everything we did was indoors. I'm impressed that we did get a reprise in the weather for Katie to make it into the church without messing up her hair.

China Fleet County Club Wedding - Lisa and Rob

To quote the Levellers "What a Beautiful Day" is probably the best way to sum up Lisa and Rob's wedding. Not least because we were not expecting good weather and as you can see, it was fantastic.

I loved that there was a bagpiper playing as the bride entered the church. This only the 2nd wedding I've photographed with a bagpiper and the other was in Scotland.

As ever, Julie from the China Fleet Country Club ensured that everything ran smoothly and we were able to get some lovely photographs to tell the story of this great occasion.

Pauline and Dave had an amazing day for their Moorland Gardens Hotel Wedding. It's always a great pleasure to photograph there, Andrew and the team at Moorlan Gardens are fantastic, so well organised, it makes my life easy, also, they have been doing a lot of work on the grounds to give even more photographic options than before.

The wedding had a real family feel, with plenty of children adding a huge amount of fun to the day.

It makes a change to do a beach shoot for a pre wedding, and although the weather wasn’t looking great we had a great time. Photographing at Bigbury is always amazing as there is such diversity, I just wish it was a little closer so we could shoot there more often.

Alex and Tom were amazing fun, even if a little nervous about the thought of being photographed. It didn’t take them long to get into it though and as you can see we created some lovely images.

I’m really looking forward to next month for their big day, it’s going to be a little different to the norm as it will be on a farm so I can’t wait for that!!!

Wedding season 2015 is off to a flying start with the stunning wedding of Gayle and Phil. I simply couldn’t have asked for a better couple to kick off the new season, I had a total blast. Even though the weather didn’t behave and I was suffering from a chest infection nothing could get in the way of this being a great day.

Gayle and Phil were a dream to work with, lots of fun (watch out for the Photo Booth photos coming up later) and as the photos will show, a great looking couple which made my job an easy one.

Another wedding that was a privilege to photograph, Rebecca were brilliant to work with, the venue was lovely and the weather behaved and even gave us an amazing sunset.

I hadn’t photographed a wedding at Whitsand Bay Hotel before, but I certainly hope someone books me for one down there soon. The location is simply stunning and gives a great mix of locations without the need to travel.

Helen and Harri’s Wedding – Plymouth Wedding Photography

What can I say? I knew this wedding was going to be a blast when I met Helen and Harri for the first time, this was then further confirmed when I did their pre wedding shoot.

Needless to say, the wedding didn’t disappoint, there was joking, laughter, fun, romance, superheroes, wellington boots, a few tears and what has to rank as the best ever groom’s speach that I’ve heard (great job Harri!).

The weather wasn’t really on our side so we didn’t get as many photos of just Helen and Harri as I had hoped but what we did get tell the story of this fantastic couple and their very memorable day.

Don’t miss the Dinosaur shot we constructed, that was a first for me and I think it epitomises what this wedding was like.

Another from a few months ago….. the catch-up process continues.

Well, what can I say about this wedding? How about, amazing, fun, different, personal and lots of farm hardware as a start?

I know I’ve said it many times, but there is nothing more fun for me than when a couple make a wedding their own and do something a little different. If you thought a Rolls-Royce was an expencive wedding car, you can forget that, Nicola and Sam had a Fendt tractor and a pair of grass foragers instead.

I had a total blast, the whole family were great to work with and hopefully this selection shows what a brilliant couple Nicola and Sam make.

I was looking at my terribly empty page and thought I really should get some more photos up (yes, I know, we’ve heard it all before). I photographed Christina and Jon’s wedding a couple of months ago which was brilliant, however, as I handn’t included any of their pre wedding shots from back in March, so I thought it about time I popped them up.

Another great wedding from a couple of months ago as I’m a long way behind with adding new photos, this one was a little different to the norm. Ellie and Rob started with a traditional church service at Wembury Church (Saint Werburgh’s), then when getting to Langdon Court Hotel held a hand fasting ceremony.

The weather wasn’t really on our side, however, we did manage to get to Wembury beach and the mist created some beautiful atmospheric photos in the evening.

I think it is safe to say that a great day was had by all!

Lu and Rob are a fantastic couple who were married a few years ago. Leading up to their ceremony we went out for a combined pre ‘wedding’, pre blessing and family shoot. Whatever it was, it was a blast! A great location, some fun conversations, a lot of laughs and even a game of Pooh sticks.

What a summer of weddings I had, simply stunning and some great weather! The wedding of Marie and Paul is right up there, what a fantastic couple and boy did they choose a cracking location and booked the sun as well

Although I hadn’t met the happy couple, as they live in Scotland, they were great to photograph and I had a really enjoyable day with all the whole family. I’m sure by now that anyone who regularly follows my work will have realised I love my job and it is weddings like this that make it even better.

It’s time for me to share another great wedding. We couldn’t have asked for a better day, the weather was lovely and everyone had a ball. Moorland Garden Hotel is a beautiful location and the VW Campers were pretty impressive as well.

To add to the fun, Michelle and Mark had organised a casino evening and they also booked my photo booth (pictures will be up later for this). Anyway, that’s enough of me talking, time for you to enjoy the photos!!

Sam and Mark had a beautiful wedding at Wembury Church with the reception at Langdon court. I would love to say the weather was on their side but unfortunately it was pretty wet most of the day. Even so, this was an amazing wedding, everyone had a great time and the venues as ever were brilliant. I think I can safely say they had one of my favorite cakes ever, made by Ezzie Cakes, really classy and a little different to the norm. We even managed to get a shot with a rainbow which was cool, just a shame we were inside and didn’t spot it earlier as it was just going when we made it outside. Another wedding that didn’t disappoint with a wonderful couple, great location and sunny weather….. OK, it was a little cold but what do we expect at the end of October. I was impressed with how brave Katherine was to go out in the cold to get some lovely photos, I was even more impressed with the bravery of arriving at the reception in an canoe!!!! The other really memorable part of this wedding, which added to the canoe, made this wedding one to remember for a long time was the vast amount of confetti, I could hardly see the couple at some points and even I got totally covered. Amazing….. what a great day!!

Plymouth Hoe Wedding – Astor Hotel – Natasha and Scott

Well, to say I’m behind on posting weddings to my blog is an understatement so I thought I better play catch up

September has to be the new summer, all my weddings in September had brilliant weather (and October for that matter). I’ve not photographed at the Astor Hotel before, but it is a great venue with an amazing location about 30 seconds from Plymouth Hoe. Natasha and Scott were a fantastic couple to photograph and having a great location with weather to match I don’t think we could have asked for much more. I love it when I get to use my portable lighting as it really gives a different look to the photos that you can’t get any other way. Not only that, but we also had a lovely sunset so I was a happy photographer I hope you enjoy look at this small selection of photos and keep your eye out for the next wedding soon.

Sej and Mark had a beautiful indoor/outdoor wedding at Polhawn Fort. There was an intimate ceremony inside the venue at lunch time and then the preparations began for the larger outdoor one. The weather was just kind enough not to rain during the outdoor ceremony and it started just as they headed down the aisle….. phew! I loved working with these two, they are film makers so I could talk a little ‘geeky’ at times as we use some of the same gear.

Another fantastic wedding, the 2nd in a row with the reception at the Duke of Cornwall hotel whch is great as it’s a wonderful location for indoor photography…. essential for this wedding as the weather really wasn’t on our side. Ben was looking very impressive in his Naval uniform and as you can see Jenny was a beautiful bride. The service was held at Stoke Damerel Church, I’ve not photographed there before, but I certainly would like to get the opportunity to again. After the ceremony we went to the Hoe, however the weather was against us so we didn’t hand around and headed for the Duke. I can’t believe that I’ve lived in the South West for nearly all my life and have never visited Dartington Gardens, what a beautiful place and so many great locations.

Jason and Nikki’s wedding is possibly the one that I’m most looking to this year as it brings together my love of the sea and love of wedding photography. They are having the reception at a yacht club and we will be going out (weather permitting) on a couple of boats to get some really uniquie shots…… should be amazing!

Our shoot was really relaxed and even though the weather was wet (yet again), Jason and Nikki’s enthusiasm wasn’t dampened down.

Sarah and James’ Wedding – Bickleigh Church, Plymouth Hoe, Duke of Cornwall Hotel – Plymouth We

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing Sarah and James’ wedding here in Plymouth. The day started with bridal preparations at Sarah’s parent’s house then off to meet the boys at Bickleigh church ready for the ceremony, after a few group photos outside we then headed up to Plymouth Hoe for some shots with James and Sarah before going to the Duke of Cornwall Hotel for the reception.

The weather again turned out great after initially threatening ot be wet and horrible so that made things even better. Sarah and James are a very easy couple to photograph, as far as I could tell they were not worried at all about being in front of the camera so this made my life very easy. There was a minor set back of one of the bridal cars breaking down, but this was sorted and a replacement car was waiting at the end of the ceremony to take the happy couple off to the Hoe.

The Hoe is a great venue for anyone local, it has many locations to work with and great views, added to that, the Duke also has some lovely elements which allowed us to get some additional great intimate photos of the two of them.

As ever I’ve written too much and most of you haven’t got this far down so time for some photos.

Polhawn Fort Wedding – Sarah and Matt – St Peters Church – Plymouth Wedding Photography

For those of you who read my blog regularly I’m sure you will think that I sound like a stuck record, but I’m going to say it again, what a great wedding. Sarah and Matt are a fantastic fun and totally in love couple.

Preparations took place at Polhawn Fort in Cornwall and then we headed back to Plymouth and St Peters Church for the service then back down to Polhawn Fort for the reception. This is my 2nd time at Polhawn so far this year and I have one more there in the summer, but I hadn’t been to St Peter’s before. It was very refreshing to photograph in such a well lit church, making my life easier then many churches where lighting is much lower.

I mentioned in the week to Matt and Sarah that I would love to find a rapeseed field and I’m really pleased that we did as the colours were fantstic and it’s only something is around for a short amount of time. Back at the venue we were able to get down to the private beach and use other elements of the Fort so there was a good deal of variety.

Borringdon Hall Wedding – Sarah and Paul – Wembury Church – Plymouth Wedding Photography

Sarah and Paul both now live in Birmingham but Paul is from this neck of the woods and his parents still live down here and I’m really pleased that they did as I had so much fun working with them.

Peparations took place at Borringdon Hall then on to Wembury Church and back to Borrindon for the wedding.

The theme colour was a lovely cadbury purple which worked really well on both the bridesmaids and all the men so a great choice!

The only disappointing part of the day was the weather didn’t want to play ball after the ceremony so we had to cut short the group shots and also we couldnt’ get the planned shots on Wembury Beach which is a shame. However, we were able to find a bit of a break in the weather at Borringdon hall and got some cracking shots there.

Oh, and we even had Sir Francis Drake with us at the reception for a bit of extra colour.

Sarah and Andy – Pre Wedding Shoot – Radford Park, Plymouth

Sarah and Andy were not sure where they wanted their photos, so I suggested popping down to Radford Park which is just before you get to Hooe and it worked out really well. There is a nice mix of park and having the lake plus the old building which I’ve never been able to find out the history of.

The weather on the day of the shoot wasn’t looking good with thunder just before I left home, but when we got to the location it was perfectly fine and there was some nice blue patches in the otherwise pretty grey clouds. The potentially bad weather didn’t put Sarah and Andy off and after the usual initial nerves of being photographed things went great. They are a lovely couple, a lot of fun to be with and I know their wedding in a couple of months will be a really enoyable one.

The Wedding Photo Booth is here!

I’m pleased to formally announce my new wedding photo booth. I’ve been working on an offering that is not only more cost effective than one of the ‘normal’ in a box photo booths, but that also produces what I believe to be better results.

For anyone who knows me, I won’t do anything unless I can do it really well (this annoys my wife and I’m often told to stop being such a perfectionist). However, working in an industry that is all about image, I can’t do things by half, it is either done right or not at all.

So, what is the difference to a normal photo booth? Mainly it is size, and size means people in a photo, or room to be more expressive and have more fun. Another major difference is the photos are taken by me, not an automated machine. This really helps to get the most out of the guests using the photo booth as I can use my skill as a photographer to engage with people and generally have a lot of fun. Lastly, it is quality, as I’m using one of my professional cameras, the images are professional quality, so if you want a big print then no problem at all. The Mark Smith Photography Photo Booth is like having a studio at your reception.

I’ve probably got you a little worried now as I’ve been talking about being big, well it’s not nearly as bad as you think, I just need a minium of 12′ x 12′ (3.6m x 3.6m) and we are good to go.

The bride and groom will get the photos at high resolution as part of their DVD set and guests are able to view and order any photos they would like from the password protected website. On top of that, the bride and groom will receive a large collage print made up from their favorite photos (see the first photo below).

Tanya and John’s Wedding – HMS Drake – New Continental – Plymouth Wedding Photographer

I’m not sure if I’m just lucky or something but I had another fantastic couple to photograph at their recent wedding. We started the day at Tanya’s mum’s house, then on to H.M.S. Drake for the wedding, up to the Plymouth Hoe for a few shots then finished off at the New Continental hotel. The weather behaved pretty well allowing us to get a great selection of photos.

I had a really enjoyable time, Taya and John are fantastic so hope they have a great life together.

Carly and Tony Pre Wedding Shoot – Mount Batten, Plymouth

This was a great, shoot, yep, I know I pretty much say that all the time but I honestly get to work with some fantastic people.

I’ve not done a shoot at Mount Batten before but I think I will be suggesting it again as there are a lot of options for different looks all with in a short distance. Carly and Tony were pretty chilled about being photographed but having other people watching as it was quite busy added a few nerves. I don’t think it took too long for them to relax and we got some lovely photos. I used a mix of natural light and also portable studio lighting to create these photos.

July is going to be great a month too look out for with their wedding and some pretty cool other ones as well.

James and Sarah – Pre Wedding Shoot – Wembury Beach

Wembury beach and the surrounding area are a popular choice with couples for their pre wedding photo sessions. My recent sessions there haven’t been met with good weather so it was a refreshing change that for James and Sarah the sun decided to shine….. the wind also made an appearance but I guess you can’t have everything.

James and Sarah are getting married in the summer so a few months yet before their big day and this session did exactly as desired, we created some lovely photographs and also they were able to get used to being photographed. It is always very pleasing to hear at the end of a pre wedding session that it wasn’t nearly as bad as they imagined and actually it was quite a lot of fun. That’s the difference between just having someone take a snap and being photographed by a professional, photography really is a lot of fun!

Helen and Lyndon’s Wedding – Polhawn Fort Wedding Photography – Preview

Firstly an apology for how little I’ve been putting up on the blog recently, things are pretty busy with weddings, pre-wedding shoots, editing, album creation etc. However, as I don’t have any weddings this weekend I wanted to get something online, and you never know, I might get more than one post up

Now that’s over, back to the important bit which is the wedding of Helen and Lyndon. They wisely chose Polhawn Fort for their wedding, it is certainly one of the most picturesque wedding venues local to Plymouth, helped by having a private beach. Unfortunately, it is still a little muddy to get down so we weren’t able to take any beach photos.

Muddy paths aside, the wedding was fantastic, everyone looked brilliant and the weather really behaved for us so we were able to get some great wedding photos for them to help remember this amazing day.

As usual, I’ve written far too much so over to the photos, as this is just a preview I’ve only included a handful of photos, once Helen and Lyndon are back from their 3 week honeymoon (lucky them) I will put some additional photographs online.

American Football - Bristol v Exeter

I've been longing to photograph an American Football game for probably 4 years but with work, travel and then living abroad I've never been able to get to one. Finally last weekend I was successful and managed to get a game between Bristol (UWE) and Exeter University. I will admit that although I used to photograph lots of sport, I felt totally out of my depth, I'm just glad I was shooting for fun and not a paid job. It would be great to get to another game in the future and will hopefully do a better job next time.

Lyndon and Helen – Pre Wedding Shoot on the Hoe – Plymouth Wedding Photography

The weather wasn’t looking good for this pre wedding photo shoot so we decided to pull it forward a couple of hours. I’m glad we did as just as I arrived home afterwards it started to rain!

Even though dry, we weren’t blessed with a blue sky but rather a dull grey background to the photos, however, I’m pleased to say that didn’t detract too much from the session and we managed to capture some lovely photos of Lyndon and Helen. I love photo shoots on Plymouth Hoe as there are lots of different elements to bring into a shoot and add variety to the photos.

I’m really looking forward to the wedding of Lyndon and Helen as it is only a few weeks away now and taking place at the fantastic Polhawn Fort in Cornwall. I’m hoping for a bit of a break in the clouds on the wedding day, as being on the coast with a private beach there will be some great opportunities for sunset shots and fantastic scenic ones too.

Ben and Jenny – Pre Wedding Shoot @ Devonport Park – Plymouth Wedding Photography

You’ve just seen the first wedding of 2012 and this is the first pre wedding shoot.

For those who are new to my photography, the main reason for the pre wedding shoot is to help a couple become more relaxed on their wedding day. Most of us are not celebrities or models so don’t spend our lives being photographed, but rather we are ‘normal’ people who are about to celebrate the most special days of our lives. This makes the prospect of being photographed professionally, especially on such an important day quite stressful to some (usually the guys). I can say that I empathise with this situation as I much prefer being behind the camera than in front. Most of the worries go away pretty quickly when people realise that it isn’t too painful being ‘shot’ and I always try to inject a lot of fun and get the couples to think about one another rather than me.

Ben and Jenny were pretty typical in relation to the above with Ben admitting he was nervous, but as you can see from the photos they are a great looking couple who photograph really well so there was nothing at all to be concerned about.

John and Kirsty’s Wedding – The Edgemoor Hotel – Plymouth Wedding Photography

What a great wedding to the be the first of 2012, very cool and fun couple, good (if a little cold) weather, and a lovely location with friendly staff.

Can you tell that I had a blast photographing this wedding……? There is something to be said for having the entire day in one location, don’t get me wrong, I love a church wedding too, especially some of the great architecture etc, but to have the boys getting ready near the girls and no travelling time from the bridal prep to the church then church to reception makes for many more photo opportunities.

I was really impressed by The Edgemoor hotel, I’ve not been there before but would certainly recommend checking it out for somewhere just a little different. From talking to John and Kirsty the staff were really open to making the day the one the bride and groom want rather than the same as every other couple who have been before.

Well, nothing has changed since 2011, I still like to talk (write) too much so let’s get on with the photos.

The Brown Family – Mobile Studio Photography

It’s not often that I get to do a real portrait photography shoot with people I know, so it was a nice change to be able to photograph my friends the Brown Family. The pressure is certainly different in a situation like this, as everyone knows you so they are relaxed, but also it will mean that a lot of people you know will be looking at the photos later.

I’m pleased to say it went really well, not difficult really with a good looking and fun family such as this. For me, I still love outdoor or location portrait photography but I still had a great time with the mobile studio.

The 2nd John in as many weeks for a pre wedding photo session. The only problem was I embarrassed myself by getting names messed up a couple of times and called Tanya, Kirsty….. oops!!!! Sorry Tanya

Well it was a wet windy and grey day but John and Tanya braved the weather to get some shots in before their wedding which will be March 2012. We didn’t have too long but it was a lot of fun and I know their wedding will echo this….. roll on March!

John and Kirsty Pre Wedding Shoot at Burrator Reservoir – Plymouth Wedding Photography on location

John and Kirsty are getting married in the middle of January and like most of the couples I photograph they had a pre-wedding photo session on location. It was a pretty cold day at Burrator Reservoir but they were both in good spirits and we had a fun time getting a few different shots in a selection of locations. The main aim of these sessions, apart from getting some nice photos, is to allow the couple to relax in front of the camera so on the big day it is one less thing to worry about.

Looking forward to this wedding, partly hoping for some snow but as it will take place on the moors we are concerned that guests might not make it it conditions are bad. For me, any dry wedding is always a big bonus to get the best shots for a couple on their special day.

I hope that everyone is doing well and keeping warm….. really not nice weather out there at the moment! I also hope it decides to get better as I have a wedding on Friday and then a pre wedding shoot on Sunday – yes, you can expect some photos up here pretty soon.

When I get a chance, I like to look over different wedding sites/blogs to keep up with what is going on in the wonderful world of weddings. Statistics for 2012 – Plymouth wedding photographer turns researcher/statistician.

Things get a little quiet for a wedding photographer in the winter. I’m 2nd photographer another professional on the 16th Dec as his regular partner is not well and then I’ve got my first of 2012 on the 14th of Jan 2012 which I’m really looking forward too. Could that be my first snowy wedding?

Anyway, I decided as there was a gap in shooting and it is nearly the end of 2011 I would look over the bookings for 2012 and see what is going on. I found a few interesting statistics…… well I think so, so decided to share them.

-The most popular name for brides booked in 2012 is Sarah with a total of 4.
-The most popular name for grooms is John of which I have 2.
-The most popular venue is Polhawn Fort, I have 3 weddings taking place there in 2012. For those who don’t know, this is a fantastic venue between Rame Head and Whitsand Bay which are in Cornwall. This is the only venue that I’m currently booked for in Cornwall.
-The furthest away wedding (geographically) is in Clevedon, North Somerset.
-The most bridesmaids at a single wedding (adults) is 5.
-The most groomsmen at a single wedding (adults) is 5, but not the same wedding as above.

Lastly, the thing that made me laugh most on one of my booking forms where I ask if there are any details that I need to especially aware of is “Photographer my be required to partake in Greek dancing and plate smashing!”.

Bridal Fayre Update – More tiring than photographing a full wedding!

What a fun time the wedding fayre was, met some fantastic people, both visitors to the show and also other traders who were there. I love photography (did you guess?) and I love talking photography, so I would have to say this was one of the most enjoyable things to do apart from actually being out photographing a wedding.

I always make myself laugh when I see photos of me. This one is no different, with my 6’6″ and 20 stone body make the display look pretty small. For the observant out there, the box of Quality Street played no part in my getting to be this size!

Bridal Fayre this Saturday (26th) at the Future Inn on Tavistock Road – Plymouth Wedding Photog

I love attending shows, both as a visitor and a supplier. This weekend I’m at the “Happily Ever After… Bridal & Prom Fair” which is taking place at the Future Inn on Tavistock Road just opposite McDonald’s.

Obviously I want you to come along and visit my stand and have a chat, but there will also be a great selection of other wedding related companies there so well worth a visit….. and it’s free! Doors open at 10am and we will be there until 4pm. Make sure you come and say ‘Hi’ and grab a chocolate.
